Present Value of a Firm’s Shares and Historical Price Value
The value of a corporations’ share shows how it is expected to do in future. For example, If Apple Stock trade today at $122.50, that means investors believe that the stock price is a good indicator of a firms future potential. Investors primary concern isn’t how Apple performed in the past 5 years, but rather how it will perform in the next 5 years. The price of a stock supposedly reflects all information in it, also called Efficient Market Hypothesis.
We will use Shares interchangeably with stocks. Buying shares of company equals buying ownership of a corporation. When, people but a firm’s share, their overall ownership in the firm is very firm. When investors buy a firm’s shares, they are that firm’s owners.
The historical share price information of a company can help investors finding out how the firm’s investors reacted when the corporation met or exceeded its quarterly expectations. Share price history can also help you make possible educated guesses on how a firm’s investors or stocks would react given a merger or a lawsuit. Even though each situation is different, knowledge of a corporation’s historical performance in the stock market will help in making better investing judgements.
To find out historical stock prices, you can have a service that provides you with raw data which displays company’s stock movements for a specified period of time, or you can have a service that provides you detailed stock prices history movements along with news events that caused it to trend that particular direction.
One of the services that I found useful was “End of Data”, I found the service to provide about 15 years of past share quotes, although that costs money. Alternatively, Google Financial Website is also an excellent place where you can find information about a corporation’s share, although the news events feature is quite limited.
